ABOUT THE MAJOR & MINOR
The Latin American and Latinx Studies (LALS) Major is a 12-credit interdisciplinary major, in which a student's credits are spread across three course clusters: social science, cultural criticism and history. Students also fulfill a language requirement, most often in Spanish or Portuguese, and they are encouraged to study abroad permitting that global travel is safe. The major’s capstone project is an independent, original research paper. The LALS minor requires students to take 6 LALS courses and to fulfill a language requirement.
To give you an example of the program’s breadth, some sample courses for Fall 2020 include Radical Arts in the Americas, Corona Capitalism: Capitalism and Inequality Across the Americas, From Ayahuasca to Zoloft: Anthropological Approaches to Drugs and Drug Use, Diplomacy in the Americas, and Race and Ethnic Politics. There are many more! In addition, some courses may not be listed here, so please visit our website or sign-up for our listserv and monthly newsletter by sending an email to lals@sas.upenn.edu to learn about additional courses.
Students are also encouraged to participate in scholarly extracurricular events and activities offered by organizations such as the Latin American and Latinx Studies Program, LALS Undergraduate Advisory Board, La Casa Latina, Greenfield Intercultural Center, and the many Latinx student organizations on campus.
