Model OAS Program for High School Students

Fall Semester 2018

Thank you for your interest in the Penn Model Organization of American States (OAS) program! The Penn Model OAS provides selected Philadelphia and Norristown high school students, mostly from public schools and who in Fall 2018 will be in either 10thor 11thgrade, to work with University of Pennsylvania undergraduate students and faculty to prepare for participation in the annual Model OAS for High Schools in Washington, D.C. The Model OAS is a simulation of global diplomacy in one of the oldest regional organizations of the world.  In the process of preparing to represent one or two countries in the hemisphere, students will attend weekly interactive seminar sessions with Penn students enrolled in the class, LALS 328: Democracy in Trouble: OAS to the Rescue? As part of their participation in this class, high school students will learn about the history, role, and purpose of the OAS, and its actions and policy recommendations regarding democracy, development, human rights, and security. Students will also study one or two countries in-depth, which they will represent at the Model OAS in Washington D.C. from November 28 to 30, 2018.  Participating high school students will strengthen their critical thinking, writing, and presentation skills by researching and writing resolutions on pressing regional problems, writing short reflection papers, preparing a final presentation, and engaging in debate, dialogue, and public speaking during class and at the Model OAS.  Most importantly, students will build new relationships with Penn students and faculty and with other high school students from Philadelphia, Norristown, and Latin America.
