Presenter Bio:

Randall Burson (he/él) is a Penn-Mellon Just Futures Initiative "Dispossessions in the Americas" Graduate Fellow. He is also an MD-PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology and Perelman School of Medicine, and a Visiting Researcher at the Institute for Indigenous and Intercultural Studies at the Universidad de la Frontera (Chile). Broadly, his research uses ethnographic and participatory approaches to study how large-scale socio-political contexts shapes peoples’ everyday experiences of giving and receiving health care. Currently, he is working with Mapuche Indigenous and biomedical health practitioners in Southern Chile’s “intercultural” clinics to understand how overlapping dispossessive processes manifest in Mapuche peoples’ health and illness. Through his dissertation research, he is also examining how these intercultural clinics becomes key sites for negotiating material resources and political self-determination in occupied Wallmapu (Southern Chile and Argentina).
