LALS Joins #Penn Remembers (10/21/20): A Day to Pause and Reflect

Dear LALS Community,

Today LALS will take a pause in solidarity with others at Penn to remember the more than 1 million people we've lost to the COVID-19 pandemic around the world, including more than 350,000 people in Latin America and over 200,000 people in the US. We are thankful for our colleagues in Penn Health and health care providers everywhere. #Penn Remembers.

Unfortunately, many Latin American countries have suffered the highest mortality rates in the world. PAHOCouncil of the Americas, and the Congressional Research Quarterly, provide comprehensive overviews of the pandemic in the region.  Black, Indigenous, Latinx and People of color in the U.S. have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19.  CCATE in NorristownJuntos in PhiladelphiaLULAC nationally have COVID-19 relief funds and offer resources on their website.

The BBC recently published a very good article examining why Latin America is the region with the highest mortality rate in the world, and the Economist reported about the pandemic's devastating effect on poverty and inequality, noting that 45 million people may become newly impoverished, affecting 37% of the population.  If you have any articles or resources that you would like to share with others, please paste the information on this Google Doc we started to gather information: LALS COVID-19 Articles and Resources
